Drawing Attention to Extraordinary Work & Topics
The Knight First Amendment Institute (KFAI) serves to promote a system of free expression that is open and inclusive, that broadens and elevates public discourse, and that fosters creativity, accountability, and effective self-government.
As part of our ongoing partnership with KFAI, Flyleaf Creative has designed assets — from poster art to digital graphics to programs — promoting special events, webinars, conferences, and symposiums. Flyleaf Creative always strives to create eye-catching graphics that are true to the Institute’s brand while striking the right tone for the specific event and its audience.

Making a Case for Support

Working closely with the senior leadership team at Knight First Amendment Institute, Flyleaf Creative designed a Case Statement for Donor Support in 2023 to visually capture what KFAI does and bolster donor support for the Institute. In addition to a presentation deck and a flippable digital PDF, the work included a centerpiece printed booklet featuring the following elements:
- Custom illustrative collages by renowned artist Mike McQuade
- Exciting typeface explorations, honoring the historic legal work of the Institute as well its future impact
- Varying page-size layouts to ignite reader engagement
This project won two Gold Indigo Awards in 2024.
Reaching New Audiences with a Documentary Film
In 2024, KFAI approached Flyleaf to design key art for their first documentary, a short film called Flashpoint directed by Max Esposito. The film, which was presented as part of the Los Angeles Times Short Docs series, “features first-hand accounts from journalists who were assaulted or arrested while reporting at protests.” With a wealth of knowledge on the client, Flyleaf was poised to address the need. Our task was to design something bold that conveys the importance of KFAI’s work as featured in the film while drawing on visual language to speak to documentary lovers who would be the target audience.
We worked with Esposito to execute and elevate his vision for the poster, exploring typographic solutions and approaches to imagery, first with moodboards, then with a series of design concepts, that succinctly communicated what the film was about and set the tone. After helping determine what information needed to be included and designing an evocative poster, we developed the art into a suite of graphics for various uses by the client and the LA Times.

Our work with the Institute dates back to 2018 when we first partnered with them to design a poster and graphics for their special symposium titled “Secrets and Leaks: Whistleblowers, Journalists, and National Security.” Since then, we have designed digital marketing assets for various high-profile events.

An Annual Showcase of Impact

In 2019, Flyleaf Creative designed a new Annual Report for KFAI that provides an overview of the highlights and achievements of the previous year, active litigation, press highlights, organization goals, research and public education, and financial reports. The 16-page report offered supporters a crucial understanding of the Institute’s impact in a creative, engaging format.
